Holinshed's Chronicles, first issued in 1577 and expanded in 1587, is a collaborative prose history of England, Scotland, and Ireland from legendary origins to the Tudor present. Raphael Holinshed organized and wrote much of the English narrative, drawing on earlier annalists, while others contributed the Scottish and Irish sections and later revisions. The work proceeds reign by reign: kings, battles, rebellions, laws, and portents, with set-piece accounts of figures such as Macbeth, Lear, and the later Plantagenets and Tudors. It is a chronicle compilation rather than a modern analysis, and it became a principal narrative source for Elizabethan history plays.
