Drawn from Washington Irving's Sketch Book of 1819-20 and later gathered as Old Christmas, this festive narrative follows the American traveller Geoffrey Crayon as he is taken by Frank Bracebridge to the family hall in Yorkshire for an old-fashioned English Christmas. The Squire keeps up the Yule log, mistletoe, carols, and games in the servants' hall. Crayon describes the coach journey, Christmas Eve supper, Christmas Day service and sports, and the Christmas dinner in the great hall, with Master Simon, the parson, and a young officer among the company. The piece is a sketch of revived custom and hospitality, not a plotted novel.
