This volume collects Dickens's five Christmas books of the 1840s as a set. A Christmas Carol (1843) follows the miser Ebenezer Scrooge through visitations that force him to see his past, the Cratchit present, and a loveless future. The Chimes concerns the porter Trotty Veck and New Year bells that show him visions of the poor. The Cricket on the Hearth is a domestic tale of the carrier John Peerybingle and a suspected breach of trust. The Battle of Life follows the sisters Grace and Marion Jeddler in a country town. The Haunted Man tracks the chemist Redlaw, who is offered the gift of forgetting sorrow. Each tale is a separate seasonal narrative rather than a chapter of one novel.
