This single-volume history surveys China from the early dynasties through the imperial sequence to the People's Republic and the late-twentieth-century economy. Keay follows the Shang and Zhou foundations, unification under Qin, the Han, the long cycles of division and reunification, Tang and Song, Mongol and Ming rule, the Qing, and the nineteenth- and twentieth-century crises. He also treats regions often left at the edge of a north-China dynastic narrative, including the southwest, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Manchuria, and the effects of Buddhism, trade, and non-Han dynasties. The book is a consecutive political and cultural narrative for the general reader, not a specialist monograph on one period.
