Set on the desert planet Arrakis some years after Paul Atreides became emperor, this third Dune novel follows his twin children, Leto and Ghanima, as they come of age amid a theocratic empire and a planet being terraformed out of its old dryness. Their aunt Alia rules as regent and is increasingly unstable under ancestral memory. Pretenders, a blinded preacher in the desert, and factions of Fremen, courtiers, and off-world powers contest the twins' future. Leto in particular faces a choice about whether to accept a transforming path that would lock humanity onto a single grim course in order to avert worse ones.
