This fourth novel of A Song of Ice and Fire follows the scramble to hold power after the war among the claimants. In King's Landing, Cersei Lannister rules as regent for Tommen and tries to free the crown from debt and rivals. Jaime is sent to restore order in the riverlands. Brienne of Tarth searches a ruined countryside for Sansa Stark. Sansa lives in the Vale under another name; Arya trains in Braavos; Samwell Tarly travels toward Oldtown. On the Iron Islands a kingsmoot chooses a new lord; in Dorne, Arianne Martell schemes around Myrcella. Several major figures from earlier volumes are offstage. The book is a multi-strand novel of political aftermath, not a single-hero quest.
