This selection of Anton Chekhov's correspondence follows him from a teenager writing home in the 1870s to his last months in 1904. The letters are addressed to family, publishers, fellow writers, theatre people, and, later, the actress Olga Knipper. They record medical practice, the building of the Melikhovo household, the Sakhalin journey, the staging of the late plays, money worries, and the progress of tuberculosis. He discusses story-writing, the Moscow Art Theatre, and the daily facts of travel and illness. The book is an autobiographical record in letters, not a novel: a life assembled from what he chose to tell particular recipients.
