First published in 1952, this children's novel is set on a New England farm and in the nearby county fairgrounds. Fern Arable saves a runt pig, Wilbur, from slaughter; he is later sent to her uncle's barn, where he is befriended by Charlotte, a grey spider, and by the rat Templeton and the other animals. When Wilbur learns he is being fattened for killing, Charlotte weaves words about him into her web, drawing human attention and changing his prospects. The story follows the seasons of one year: friendship, work, and the limits of what a spider can do for a pig. It is a farm fable about loyalty and mortality among creatures who can speak to one another.
