This historical study reconstructs the life and government of Charlemagne, king of the Franks and, from 800, emperor in the West. Barbero follows the Saxon wars, the conquest of the Lombard kingdom, campaigns against the Avars, and the administration of a realm stretching from the Pyrenees to the Elbe. He treats the court at Aachen, the use of counts and missi, the alliance with the papacy, and the coronation in Rome, drawing on contemporary annals, letters, and capitularies. The book presents Charlemagne as a war-leader and manager of a Frankish aristocracy, not as a legend. It is political and military history of the late eighth and early ninth centuries.
