This volume presents Paul Cezanne in his own words and images rather than as a plates-only picture book. It combines a selection of his paintings, drawings, and watercolours with letters and other writings, and with memoirs by friends who knew him. The correspondence follows his life between Aix-en-Provence and Paris: family tensions, his friendship with Zola and its rupture, dealings with dealers and fellow painters, and his late concentration on Mont Sainte-Victoire, bathers, and still life. The editorial arrangement sets pictures beside the artist's statements about form, colour, and the difficulty of realizing what he saw. It is a documentary self-portrait in letters and works, not a conventional monograph.
