Celtic Myths and Legends

By An Anthology · 2006

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This anthology gathers retellings of myths and heroic tales from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Cornwall, and Brittany. Typical groups include origin stories and invasions, the Ulster cycle around Cuchulainn, the Fenian tales of Fionn mac Cumhaill, the Four Branches of the Mabinogi, and later Arthurian matter from Welsh and Breton tradition. Figures move between the human world and the otherworld; cattle raids, quests, geasa, and sovereignty contests drive the plots. The book is a survey of Celtic narrative rather than a single epic: a sequence of legends about gods, warriors, and enchanted places, compiled for consecutive reading rather than as a scholarly corpus of original-language texts.
