By Robert Louis Stevenson · 2006
Back to CataloguePublished in 1893 as a sequel to Kidnapped, this novel follows David Balfour after his return from the Highlands to Edinburgh. He tries to secure justice for James Stewart of the Glens, accused in the Appin murder, and is drawn into the legal and political machinery of the Lord Advocate Prestongrange. He meets Catriona Drummond, daughter of the unreliable Jacobite James More, and their attachment is complicated by her father's schemes and by David's testimony. The action moves from the city to Holland and the Scottish Lowlands. The book is a historical romance of law, loyalty, and a young man's attempt to act honourably among spies and advocates.
