During the Second World War, Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces bombardier stationed on the Mediterranean island of Pianosa, tries to stay alive as his squadron's required missions keep rising. First published in 1961, the novel follows his flights over Italy and the officers, doctors, and airmen around him: Colonel Cathcart, who raises the mission count; Milo Minderbinder, who turns the mess into a trading syndicate; Doc Daneeka; the chaplain; and Nately and Hungry Joe. Catch-22 is the regulation that a man who asks to be grounded for insanity thereby proves he is sane enough to fly. The book is a comic satire of military bureaucracy in which self-preservation and official logic cancel each other.
