Serialised in 1860, this novel is set in County Cork during the Irish famine of the late 1840s. Herbert Fitzgerald, heir to Castle Richmond, loves Lady Clara Desmond, who is also pursued by his dashing cousin Owen of Hap House. A question arises whether Sir Thomas Fitzgerald's marriage was valid, which would shift the estate and title. Around the love plot Trollope places the relief works, soup kitchens, and landlord anxieties of the famine years. The book is a marriage-and-inheritance story bound to a contemporary social crisis: who may marry, who will inherit, and what the gentry owe a starving countryside.
