Captains Courageous

A Story of the Grand Banks

By Rudyard Kipling · 1995

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1897, this novel follows Harvey Cheyne, the spoilt son of an American railroad magnate, who falls from a transatlantic liner and is picked up by the Gloucester schooner We're Here. Captain Disko Troop refuses to put aside the Grand Banks season and puts the boy to work among the dories, bait, and salt. Harvey learns the fishery beside Troop's son Dan and the rest of the crew. The book is a sea apprenticeship story, not a treatise on the banks and not a family saga of the Cheynes.
