This volume presents the journals of James Cook's three Pacific voyages between 1768 and 1779. The first, in Endeavour, takes the transit of Venus at Tahiti, then charts New Zealand and the east coast of Australia. The second pushes the Resolution toward the Antarctic and among the islands of the South Pacific. The third seeks a northern passage, reaches the Hawaiian islands, and ends with Cook's death at Kealakekua Bay. The text is a working record of navigation, landfall, contact with island peoples, and shipboard command, kept by the captain rather than recast as a later history.
