Issued in 1864-1865, this first of the Palliser novels follows three women who must choose among suitors. Alice Vavasor jilts the worthy John Grey for her reckless cousin George, then has to live with the political and money consequences. Lady Glencora, newly married to the diligent Plantagenet Palliser, is tempted to fly with her old love Burgo Fitzgerald. The widow Greenow, more comic, weighs a prosperous farmer against a dashing captain. London, the country, and a Continental excursion supply the stages. The book is a multi-plot novel of marriage and Parliament, not a single love story.
