Winter collects the last three novels of Powell's twelve-volume sequence narrated by Nicholas Jenkins, covering the years after the Second World War into the 1960s. Jenkins, now a literary man of a certain age, watches the old set reassemble in London, Venice, and the English countryside: writers, publishers, and the still-ascending Widmerpool, whose public life and private scandals occupy much of the later action. Figures from school and the 1920s return diminished, transfigured, or dead. The books are social comedy about late middle age, cultural fashion, and the running-down of a network that has been observed for half a century.
