Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
An Indian History of the American West
By Dee Brown · 2007
Back to CataloguePublished in 1970, this history recounts the dispossession of Native American nations on the Great Plains and in the Southwest during the second half of the nineteenth century, told primarily from Indigenous points of view. Brown follows broken treaties, forced removals, and wars involving the Navajo, Cheyenne, Apache, Sioux, and other peoples, and the U.S. Army and settler governments they faced. The narrative moves from the 1860s through the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890. It is a consecutive account of military and legal conquest, built from council records, testimony, and contemporary reports, not a biography of a single leader.
