This novel continues the career of Thomas Cromwell at Henry VIII's court as the king's marriage to Anne Boleyn fails to produce a surviving son. Henry turns toward Jane Seymour of Wolf Hall. Cromwell, now Master Secretary, manages the household, the factional wars, and the gathering of evidence that will bring Anne and several men around her to trial. The narrative stays close to Cromwell's memory, calculations, and old scores. The book is a historical novel of a few months of politics, not a full life of Henry or of Anne.
