Summer comprises the fourth, fifth, and sixth novels of Powell's sequence, carrying Nicholas Jenkins from the late 1920s through the 1930s. Jenkins marries into the Tolland family, moves among London literary offices and country houses, and continues to cross the path of Widmerpool, now pushing through business and politics. Casanova's Chinese Restaurant and its neighbouring volumes bring in musicians, left-wing intellectuals, and failing marriages; The Kindly Ones ends as Europe slides toward war and an earlier generation's ghosts are recalled. The tone remains comic and observational: a chronicle of love affairs, dinner tables, and professional manoeuvre in the last years of interwar England.
