Brideshead Revisited
The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder
By Evelyn Waugh · 2018
Back to CataloguePublished in 1945, this novel is narrated by Charles Ryder, who looks back from wartime army service to his years among the Flyte family of Brideshead Castle. At Oxford he is taken up by the charming, self-destructive Sebastian; later he becomes a painter and is drawn to Sebastian's sister Julia and to the Catholic household presided over by Lady Marchmain. The book follows friendship, conversion, and marriage through the 1920s and 1930s as money, faith, and temperament pull the Flytes apart. It is a memory novel of an English Catholic aristocracy and of a man who finds he cannot remain only a spectator.
