Published in 1958, this novella is narrated by a young writer in a New York brownstone who becomes entangled with his upstairs neighbour Holly Golightly, a slim cafe-society girl who lives by parties, borrowed money, and visits to Tiffany's when she is afraid. Holly invents herself daily, keeps a nameless cat, and is connected to a jailed gangster she visits as a favour. Figures from her Texas past and from the city's nightlife press in. The story watches a constructed glamour from the next room: a short fiction about intimacy, performance, and the cost of remaining unattached in mid-century Manhattan.
