First published in 1932, this novel is set in a World State that breeds and conditions its citizens in castes from Alpha to Epsilon, keeps them quiet with the drug soma, and replaces family and birth with hatcheries and state nurseries. Bernard Marx, an uneasy Alpha psychologist, and Lenina Crowne visit a New Mexico Reservation and bring back John, a young man raised on Shakespeare and a mother's shame. In London John is displayed as a Savage while he tries to live by passions the city has abolished. The book is a speculative satire of happiness organised as production, not a war story.
