Published in 1949, this novel concerns an orphan and horse-lover who is persuaded to impersonate Patrick Ashby, the missing twin heir of a Gloucestershire family, believed dead since a riverside disappearance years before. As Brat Farrar he arrives at Latchetts, is accepted by the widowed mother and the younger children, and takes up the estate's horses, while the surviving twin Simon watches him with hostility. The plot is a question of identity and of what really happened to Patrick. Tey keeps the story inside one household and its stables: a crime novel about impersonation rather than a police procedural.
