Synopsis
Kept from November 1762 to August 1763 and first published from the manuscript in 1950, this diary follows the young Scot James Boswell through a season in London. He seeks a Guards commission, records theatres, taverns, and sexual encounters, and watches himself as a social climber and a Presbyterian conscience. In May he meets Samuel Johnson, and their early conversations enter the daily notes. The book is a first-person journal of appetite and ambition, not a finished biography of Johnson.
