Back to CatalogueThis short biblical narrative, part of the Hebrew prophetic books, follows Jonah son of Amittai when he is told to go to the Assyrian city of Nineveh and announce judgment. He boards a ship in the opposite direction; a storm leads the sailors to throw him overboard, and a great fish swallows him. After a prayer from inside the fish he is cast on land, preaches in Nineveh, and sees the city repent. He then waits outside the walls, angry that destruction has been withheld, and argues with God over a plant that shades him and dies. The book is a parable of prophecy, mercy, and a reluctant messenger.
