Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy follows humanity after astrophysicist Ye Wenjie, broken by the Cultural Revolution, invites the Trisolarans — a civilization fleeing a planet wrecked by three chaotic suns — to Earth. In The Three-Body Problem, that first contact is uncovered decades later through scientist suicides, a VR game modeling Trisolaris, and the discovery that the aliens have sent sophons to freeze Earth’s science while their fleet is still centuries away. The Dark Forest turns to Earth’s response: the Wallfacer Project, Luo Ji’s deduction that the universe is a “dark forest” in which any civilization that reveals itself risks annihilation, and the uneasy deterrence that follows. Death’s End then stretches the story across eras through Cheng Xin, as that fragile peace collapses and the conflict widens from a two-world war into a struggle for survival in a cosmos far older and more hostile than anyone on Earth first understood.
