Synopsis
First published in 1911, this novel brings Zuleika Dobson, a touring beauty who performs magic, to Judas College, Oxford, where her grandfather is Warden. The undergraduates fall in love as a body; she can love only someone who does not love her. The Duke of Dorset, who at first seems able to refuse her, becomes the pivot of that paradox, and undergraduate worship turns from comedy toward a shared fatal gesture. Oxford ritual and dandy pride supply the setting. The book is a satirical fantasy, not a documentary of university life.
