Synopsis

This liturgical book is the standard public worship of the Church of England, shaped in the sixteenth century under Thomas Cranmer and settled in the 1662 English revision still widely reprinted. It contains orders for morning and evening prayer, the litany, holy communion, baptism, confirmation, marriage, burial, and the visitation of the sick, together with collects, a calendar of feasts, and the Psalter pointed for daily recitation. The language is formal Tudor-Stuart English. The work is not a narrative: it is a script for common prayer, binding priest and congregation to a yearly and weekly cycle of scripture and rite.
