First published in 1964, this novel sends James Bond to Japan after a personal collapse. At the secret service's urging he bargains with Tiger Tanaka of Japanese intelligence: help against a Soviet decoding machine in exchange for the death of Dr Shatterhand, a botanist who keeps a castle and a poisonous garden to which the suicidal come. Bond trains in local skills, takes a Japanese name and appearance, and enters the garden. The plot is a spy story of disguise and revenge in a constructed landscape of death. The book is a novel of espionage, not a travel guide.
