Synopsis
First published in 1847, this novel is set on the Yorkshire moors and is told mainly by the housekeeper Nelly Dean to the tenant Lockwood. Heathcliff, a foundling brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr Earnshaw, forms a fierce bond with Catherine Earnshaw. Her marriage to Edgar Linton of Thrushcross Grange, and Heathcliff's later campaign of revenge, divide two households across a generation. Storm, property, and inherited names shape the second half as the children of the first quarrel come of age. The book is a gothic novel of passion and lineage, not a regional guidebook.
