First published in 1975, this book surveys the City of London before and after the Great Fire of 1666 and the rebuilding associated with Christopher Wren. De Mare describes the older street plan, the destruction of 1666, and the churches, St Paul's Cathedral, and civic buildings that rose in the following decades, using photographs, earlier views, and maps. The text is architectural and topographical rather than a full life of the surveyor. The book is an illustrated history of a rebuilt city, not a picture album without commentary.
