Working (People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do)

By Studs Terkel · 2019

Synopsis

First published in 1974, this book is an oral history of American work. Terkel records interviews with people across occupations: factory and farm workers, waitresses, clerks, miners, teachers, executives, brokers, and others who describe what they do all day and how they feel about it. Speakers talk of fatigue, pride, boredom, skill, bosses, and whether a wage has meaning. The voices are grouped by theme; there is no single narrator. The book is a collection of testimony, not a labor-economics treatise and not a novel.
