First published in 1974, this memoir follows David Thomson to Woodbrook, a declining Anglo-Irish house in County Roscommon. In 1932, at eighteen, he arrived as tutor to Phoebe Kirkwood and stayed, in seasons, for ten years. He describes the Kirkwood family, farm and lake, neighbors, and the texture of Big House life before the war, and he interleaves that private story with chapters on local Irish history and on relations between landowner and tenant. Attachment to the place and to his pupil is the emotional center. The book is a memoir mixed with history, not a novel.
