First published in 1920, this novel continues the Brangwen sisters after The Rainbow. Ursula, a schoolteacher, and Gudrun, an artist, become involved with Rupert Birkin, an inspector of schools, and Gerald Crich, heir to a Midlands coal-mining fortune. The four test marriage, friendship, and industrial will against one another in the English countryside and later in the Alps. Birkin wants a bond that is not possession; Gerald's drive toward control shapes both the mines and his intimacy. The book is a philosophical novel of conversation and conflict as much as a plot of courtship, concerned with sex, class, and whether two people can meet without destroying each other.
