Set in the 1520s and early 1530s, this historical novel follows Thomas Cromwell from a Putney childhood of beatings into the household of Cardinal Wolsey and then into the service of Henry VIII. England's crisis is the king's need to set aside Katherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn, which forces a break with Rome. Cromwell, a lawyer and fixer, manages petitions, spies, and parliamentary work while remembering the mentor he could not save. Court factions, Tyndale's Bible, and the machinery of confiscation surround him. The narrative stays close to his practical intelligence. It ends with Anne's queenship still new and Cromwell's power not yet complete.
