With Napoleon in Russia 1812
The Diary of Lt H.A.... Vossler, a Soldier of the Grand Army 1812-1813
By Lt H.A. Vossler · 1969
Back to CatalogueThis is the campaign diary of Heinrich August Vossler, a young Wurttemberg cavalry lieutenant serving with Napoleon's Grande Armee. He records the 1812 march into Russia: heat, failing supply, the fighting around Smolensk, his part in the southern action at Borodino, and the retreat he survived without reaching Moscow. Later pages follow his return to duty in 1813, capture on a reconnaissance, and months as a prisoner moved through Poland and Russia. He writes as a junior officer about horses, weather, food, and the men beside him. The book is a personal narrative, not a general staff history of the invasion.
