This selection gathers Wilfred Owen's poems of the First World War, written mainly in 1917 and 1918 and issued after his death. The pieces treat gas, bombardment, patrol, casualty stations, and the distance between official praise of sacrifice and the bodies of young soldiers. Typical poems address a dead comrade, a dream meeting with an enemy, a disabled man returned home, or the Latin claim that it is sweet to die for one's country. The speaker is usually in the line or just behind it. The book is a poetry selection, not a campaign history and not a complete collected edition.
