Synopsis
First published in 1872, this children's novel follows Katy Carr, the eldest of a doctor's children in a small American town, who is tall, impulsive, and always planning scrapes with her brothers and sisters. A fall from a swing injures her and keeps her in bed, where her invalid Cousin Helen urges patience and a new kind of usefulness in the household. School, neighbors, and the younger Carrs continue around her. The book is a family story of character and recovery, not a medical case and not a school story alone.
