The Kid, an illiterate runaway from Tennessee, drifts into the mid-nineteenth-century borderlands and joins a band of scalp hunters led by John Joel Glanton, riding under a contract that turns into open slaughter across the Sonoran desert and the towns of northern Mexico and the American Southwest. Among them is Judge Holden, a huge, hairless, learned man who records, argues, and kills with equal calm. The narrative is a sequence of rides, massacres, and desert crossings rather than a puzzle plot. It is a historical novel of filibusters and mercenaries, written as a chronicle of violence on a frontier where law is only another claim.
