First published in 1924, this novel is set in the One State, a glass city that numbers its citizens and regulates work, sex, and thought under the Benefactor. D-503, a mathematician building the Integral spaceship, keeps a journal of perfect reason until I-330 leads him beyond the Green Wall to unnumbered forest people and into a plot against the state. O-90, his assigned partner, wants a child outside the rules. The conflict is between guaranteed happiness and the growth of a soul. The book is a dystopian novel of surveillance and revolt, not a treatise on mathematics.
