First published in 1814, this novel follows Edward Waverley, a young English officer of romantic reading, posted to Scotland on the eve of the 1745 Jacobite rising. Visiting the Baron of Bradwardine, then the Highland chief Fergus Mac-Ivor and his sister Flora, he drifts from Hanoverian duty toward the standard of Charles Edward Stuart. Raids, battle, and a charge of treason test him; Rose Bradwardine offers a quieter claim than Flora's political passion. Lowland law and clan loyalty pull in opposite directions. The book is a historical novel of civil war and divided allegiance, not a biography of the Young Pretender.
