In Devon at the start of the First World War, the farm horse Joey is sold from the boy Albert Narracott to the British Army. The novel follows Joey through training, the Western Front, capture by German troops, work pulling ambulances and guns, and the care of soldiers and a French civilian, while Albert enlists in hope of finding him. Chapters stay close to the horse's sensory world of mud, noise, and handlers. The book is a wartime animal narrative for younger and general readers, not a staff history of the cavalry and not a documentary of one real horse.
