Set mainly from 1805 to 1812, this novel follows several Russian families, the Rostovs, Bolkonskys, and the illegitimate Pierre Bezukhov, through drawing rooms, estates, and the wars against Napoleon. Pierre inherits a fortune and stumbles through marriage and Freemasonry; Prince Andrei seeks glory and then withdraws; Natasha Rostova grows from girlhood through a broken engagement. Battle chapters include Austerlitz and Borodino. Essays on history interrupt the fiction. First published in the 1860s, the book is a panoramic novel of society and invasion, not a military textbook and not a biography of Napoleon.
