This account, issued in 1854, records two years in a self-built cabin at Walden Pond in Massachusetts. Thoreau lists expenses, describes planting beans, sounding the pond, and watching ice and thaw, and he interleaves portraits of a Canadian woodchopper, a hermit, and townsmen who come out from Concord. He contrasts a life of deliberate simplicity with farms and shops that own their owners. Seasons structure the book more than plot. It is a philosophical memoir of one pond and one experiment in living, not a nature guide and not a novel of frontier settlement.
