Two tramps, Vladimir and Estragon, wait by a country road and a bare tree for a man named Godot who does not come. They talk, bicker, consider hanging themselves, and pass the time. Pozzo arrives driving the laden Lucky on a rope, then later returns changed; a boy brings a message that Godot will come tomorrow. The second act repeats the pattern with small alterations. First published in French in 1952 and in English soon after, the play is a tragicomedy of waiting without arrival. It is not an allegory with one agreed key and not a realistic social drama.
