Synopsis
Composed in the late thirteenth century, this prosimetrum combines poems with Dante's prose account of his love for Beatrice, from a first childhood sighting through her greeting, her death, and his resolve to write of her in a new way. Sonnets and canzoni are introduced, then explained as to occasion and meaning. Figures of Love appear in visions; friends and ladies of Florence form the social setting. The work is both a lyric sequence and a commentary on that sequence. It is not the later Comedy and not a biography of Florence.
