First published in 1915, this novel follows Axel Heyst, a detached Swede who lives on the almost abandoned tropical island of Samburan after a failed coal venture. In a Java port he helps the English musician Lena escape the hotel keeper Schomberg and the women's orchestra; he takes her to the island. Schomberg's malice sends the ruffians Mr Jones, Martin Ricardo, and the servant Pedro after imagined treasure. The book watches Heyst's philosophy of non-engagement meet love and invasion. It is an island drama of isolation and intrusion, not a naval story despite the Eastern seas.
