This three-volume history examines Victorian Britain through people, cities, and things. Victorian People treats the political and moral generation of the 1850s around the Great Exhibition and the Crimean War. Victorian Cities studies how Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Middlesbrough, Melbourne, and London grew and governed themselves. Victorian Things turns to objects, from stamps and matches to furnishings, as evidence of how the period thought and shopped. Across the set, Briggs writes social history from institutions and material life. It is a trilogy of linked studies, not a biography and not a novel of the period.
